Devision: About Us

This show was featured in Program B of Tastings  2018. Tastings is run by the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) Creative Arts Department. Devision was presented on the 23rd and 25th of August at 7:30pm. This was a short work with a run time of approximately 15 minutes, which was followed by five other short works by other emerging artists in student community.

Tastings  was presented in the Guild Theatre of Union House at the University of Melbourne which is located in Naarm. As such, Shakespearean Jeans would like to acknowledge that the devising, rehearsal and performance stages of Devision took place on the unceded land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

DEVISION

"a hilarious satire"

This short work presented by an ensemble of four performers is a piece of devised theatre about the failures of devised theatre. Devised theatre is work that is created by the actor/s and the production team in the rehearsal room, rather than a from pre-written script. The comedy follows a group of actors, Brian, Colin and Stephanie, who have a big vision but struggle to produce something of substance. Frustrated by their director Delilah, who is obsessed with creating “experimental” and “contemporary” art and starring in the performance herself, this indecisive and divided cast find their show is falling apart.

Devision interrogates the way we make meaning through art; questioning whether art should serve the audience or the artists. However it is also a comedy about the different personas that exist in the theatre-making world and the struggles of creative collaboration. It’s self-aware, self-critical and above all, satirical. Through exciting moments of mayhem, combining physical theatre, improv and scripted scenes, this show arrives at the conclusion that although art can be weird and experimental and a mess, it should ultimately be authentic.

In this meta-theatrical experience, the audience watch four characters try and fail to put on a “new and exciting” piece of devised theatre. The efforts of Delilah, Brian, Colin and Stephanie go to show that you can’t just throw all theatrical elements together and hope the audience will read meaning into it somehow. Putting something on stage because you think that’s what you’re supposed to be doing to fit into a certain genre of performance is inevitably going to feel like a wasted opportunity to make something you actually care about.

The Characters

Delilah: A contemporary dance fanatic / eccentric theatre-maker; she is confident and controlling but essentially “all talk”. Delilah is a very defensive and stubborn director who only cares about the show being powerful and edgy.

Brian: An actor who goes along with whatever the director says, no matter how unreasonable. He’s endlessly positive towards the project. Brian may be a loveable, earnest pushover, but he’s smarter than everyone thinks.

Stephanie: A very strong actor who is definitely too good for this show and should probably be in charge. Stephanie is sassy, quick-witted and actually has good ideas… if only she were allowed to voice them.

Colin: A slightly removed outsider of the cast and a bit of a closed book. Colin has secretly sensitive side; he just wants to make theatre and make friends, and is actually a really talented dramatic actor, when he chooses to be.
